The sultry night air hung heavy without the faintest breeze, weighting each inhlale as I streaked through the darkness, the dying glow from orange-tinged streetlamps was the only source of light for blocks. My Converse slapped against the pavement as I ran, a bulging black sack bouncing at my side, their shouting fading behind me. I glanced over my shoulder and halted, my heart pounding in my chest for oxygen. After a moment or two, a smug smile twisted my lips. "Two down, one to go." I breathed, brushing my silky black hair away from my sweat-dewed forehead.
I took the shallowest of breaths as I crept, my thin frame pressed tightly against a brick building. This was the last stop of the night, and I had a mission to complete. I peered around the corner just in time to see the clerk take in two of the remaining crates from the table back into the store. Seizing the perfect opportunity I crawled beside the table that displayed the last of the fruit, then took one last cautious glance around before snatching two oranges from the basket and placing them in my sack, then a third, and two more.... The jingle of the door bell startled me, I gasped and rolled under the table, pulling my legs tightly against torso.

(i know it'll drive you crazy, but i'm going to roleplay erika tonight. xD)
The distinct flapping of flip-flops could be heard clearly from the store. The pale girl stood outside for a moment as if she had forgotten what it was she had come for... Or she was simply afraid. The girl wrapped the pink scarf closer around her white neck and put on a brave face. The curious thing about this otherwise completely normal picture was the store was closed at this late hour. Undeterred by this fact, the girl opened the door, the bell attached to it ringing to announce her prescence. The storekeeper stopped what he was doing and stomped over to the girl, angrily explaining that they were closed for the night. "Yes, well if you were closed the door should have been locked," the girl snapped. She fell silent as another's thoughts began to echo in her mind. Oranges and a table... There was a thief nearby. The girl cleared her throat. "You see, I was wondering if you could help me with something..." She was distracted by the other prescence nearby. There was nothing unusual about thieves, but she was wondering if she had the guts to turn such a person in. The fact she was planning to trick the clerk into giving her the supplies she needed certainly didnt help her any. The girl growled and invaded the man's mind, shutting down his brain and rendering him unconscious. She walked to the back door of the store and threw open the door. "I know you're down there," she informed the thief. "You're hiding under a table for goodness' sake!" She tapped her arm with her fingers, waiting for the person to show themselves.

OOC; My lips are sealed. xD.
BIC; I listened carefully as what sounded like a young female entered the shop. That was probably a bad idea, considering the clerk's temper towards the end of his shift. I would know, seeing as I come here almost weekly. "Maybe she will keep him busy..." I thought, making a rapid decision to flee. Just as I was about to roll from under the table, those bells attached to the door chimed again. I froze, holding my breath. The female then spoke, informing me that the game was up. I sighed, rolled my eyes, and continued to go with my original plan, bolting straight out from under the table and running as fast I could, sack at my hip and eyes on the road. I dodged left into the one of the many zig-zagging alleyways of the city without a look back, making the assumption that the female wouldn't be bothered to chase me. It was just a few oranges, after all. But how did she know I was stealing? Or where I was hiding?

The girl's thin lips turned up into a weak smile. The thief was going to run, eh? She wasn't concerned about the stolen produce, but she really couldn't resist this little challenge. She was a telepathic for goodness' sake. Even now she could hear the confused thoughts of the other girl. With a twirl of her scarf, the gifted was off after her quarry. She kicked off her flip-flops as she ran, finding them too hard to run in. The girl cut across a few streets and finally ended up directly behind the thief. Her breathing was growing more ragged, but she wasn't about to give up. The gifted forced her way into the girl's head for half a second, momentarily stopping her legs. Hopefully a tumble would slow her down.

My lungs grew heavy in my chest as my breathing became more forced, I slowed my pace, sensing I reaching a point of safety. I looked over my shoulder to check, immediately realizing I was wrong. A girl with brilliant red hair was pounding up behind me, just a couple hundred feet back. A brief grin crossed my lips at her pursuit, then quickly faded. She was fast, but she was going to have to do better than that. I kicked off the ground for speed, ready to show her how fast I could really run, when my legs suddenly locked, causing me to trip and pitch forward into the street. I slid about a meter, the harsh gravel chewing up my exposed skin and ripping through the knee of my trousers. My arm instinctively covered my face, cheeks heating with the embarrassment of defeat. It wasn't worth trying to run again at this point. I huffed, considering my options momentarily. I could shift into my second form and play road kill... I thought. But what if she's one of them and she sees me? I quickly shot the idea away. It wasn't worth the risk.

The gifted stopped and stood over the girl on the ground for a moment, filling her lungs with what she thought was sweet air. After she had regained her breath, the barefooted girl knelt on one knee to look at the thief. "I'm sorry about that," she told her, "really, I am... But you did take off..." She brushed her windswept hair from her eyes and looked over the girl, listening to her thoughts all the while. She caught something about a 'second form' and her pale eyes lit up. "Are you all right?" she asked, offering the girl on the ground a hand.

I laid flat on the ground a moment longer, face burried in the nook of my elbow, my ears perked when the girl drew closer. I listened to her carefully, determining whether she was a potentional threat or not. I decided against it, but remained cautious. I turned my head slightly to look up at her, studying her pale face briefly. "Dandy." I replied into my arm, ignoring the girl's outstretched hand. I pushed myself up and stood, running a hand over my wounds. I yelped a little when I brushed my knee, it stung badly, but it wasn't anything that required immediate attention; just a few open scrapes and soon-to-be bruises. They'd scab over and heal themselves within a couple days. "What do you want from me?" I asked, looking around for where my bag might have rolled off to when I crashed.

The girl let her hand drop back to her side as it was ignored. "What do I want from you?" she repeated, brushing her hair away from her eyes. "I-I don't know... I just thought it was strange to find someone hiding under a table late at night... I mean, it happens A'll the time I'm sure, but I think you're different... Right?" The girl kept herself from asking the other person directly if they were 'gifted,' and figured it was safer that way. She noticed the girl was looking around and pointed out the bag that lay a couple of feet away from them.

I let out a light laugh. "Yeah, I'm 'different'." I replied, then my gaze followed the girl's gesturing finger toward my bag, crumpled up beside a dumpster. I nodded a wordless thanks, slinging it over my shoulder. "Neat trick, by the way... whatever you did to my legs." I praised, raising an eyebrow. "And how did you know where I was? Or what I was doing?" I asked out of curiosity, beginning to head in the opposite direction. I decided this girl was alright, for now.

The girl followed behind slowly, twirling a strand of hair around her finger. "I can do things to other people's minds," she told her. "I simply had your brain forget to tell your legs to walk for half a second..." The girl's eyes lit up. It was obvious she enjoyed being gifted, even if it put her life in constant danger. "As for finding you and knowing what you were up to, I could hear your thoughts in my head... They were pretty loud," she added, rubbing her temple as if she could still feel the pounding in her head.

"Here, have a prize." I laughed, reaching into my bag and tossing the girl a flawless orange. I pretended to be more careless than I was, taking an outward casual response to the idea of her gift. I rolled her words over in my head, considering what kind of damage that kind of power could wield. I mean, she turned off a part of my brain... just for that moment! That's wicked. I thought, then quickly realized she was probably listening to that too. I suddenly felt a bit uncomfortable, but continued walking. "So what's your name, then?"

The girl caught the orange and looked it over, a small smile forming at the corners of her lips. "Hmm?" the girl asked, looking up from her gift. "Oh, I'm Erika..." She let out a small laugh as the other girl's thoughts echoed in her mind. "Do you have a name?" she asked curiously. "I try not to probe others' minds unless they want me to... But I can't control listening to the thoughts you just think, I'm afraid..." she admitted.

"Kadence." I responded, my eyes fixed ahead. I found it interesting how open and trusting we all were, us who were "different" anyway. We were all in this together. It was nesccesary for survival, really. It all became instinctive over time, we had to protect each other, watch eachothers backs. So it was a refreshing feeling to meet someone of your own breed, so to say.
I led the girl down a series of complicated alleyways and shortcuts, eventually ending us up face-to-face with a ten-foot high chain link fence, past it stood what it protected: a decaying factory building. The majority of it's windows had been shattered, glass shards littered the surrounding ground. If not shattered, they were boarded up. The rest of it's details were difficult to determine in the dark, but it was practially a brick skeleton. I turned to Erika, then gestured toward the fence with my chin. "Up and at 'em, Red."

Erika looked at the condemned factory for a moment. A thrill ran through her body at the idea that there were more people like her... Possibly in the factory itself. She loowed at Kadence, wanting to ask if there were others, but realizing she might look stupid. Erika inhaled deeply and then closed her eyes, picking herself up with her mind and lifting herself over the fence. She struggled to keep from falling, and finally when she was five feet from the ground she snapped. The girl fell to the ground with a thump and groaned as the impact jarred her painfully.
